NOTE

This compilation was originally released in the United States on October 21, 1977 by Capitol Records with catalog number SKBL-11711. In the UK, the collection appeared on store shelves about a month later in a simplified version. The English version lacked the booklet and individual inner record sleeves, and the cover was plain, without embossing or pressed gold foil into it. The packaging for this set was designed by the then Art Director of Capitol records in the U.S. – Kenneth R. Anderson. For the sleeve design, Mr. Anderson took as a basis photographs by Richard Avedon, which originally appeared in 1968 in LOOK magazine in the United States and STERN in Europe.

Unfortunately, nothing new on the album, every track had been previously released, but with this release two tracks were on album for the first time, which also meant the first time in stereo. These were 'Yes It Is' and 'This Boy'.

The very first covers didn't include the photographer's name on the album gatefold. The inscription in the lower right corner 'Photography: Richard Avedon' was added a little later. Therefore, the covers of the first press can be found both without the name of the photographer and with his indication. The main thing you should pay attention to is the marking of the stampers. On the first press it consists of letters.

The labels had the design accepted at that time with the perimeter text reads: "EMI Records Limited. All Rights Of The Manufacturer And Of The Owner Of The Recorded Work Reserved. Unauthorised Public Performance, Broadcasting, And Copying Of This Record Prohibited. Made In Gt Britain" and the matrix numbers contained the mark of mastering and cutting engineer - HARRY (full name Harry T. Moss). His name can often be found on the records as the abbreviation HTM.

This compilation was republished three times in the periods 1981-1984, from 1984 to 1987 and after 1988 until the beginning of the 90s again with a new cover and labels design.

Circa 1979, stampers began to be numbered. This is the main sign of the second press, since on the plates of the second press you can find labels of the old design (from the first press), which are still preserved in large quantities in warehouses. But, at the same time, all the records already had numbering stamps in the form of numbers. Also, the second press made extensive use of the old cover design with the photographer's name in the middle of the spread.

The label design of the second press also underwent minor changes. The inscription around their perimeter became longer due to additional words and some changes to the text itself: now it began with the words 'ALL RIGHTS OF THE PRODUCER and of the owner. Unauthorized PUBLIC PERFORMANCE, BROADCASTING, COPYING AND HIRING' and ended with 'MANUFACTURED IN THE UK BY emi records limited'. Changes that have occurred in the text are highlighted in capital font.

Around 1984-1987, the collection was released again. The inscription around the perimeter of the label has changed slightly in the phrase 'Unauthorized copying, hiring, renting, public performance and broadcasting' (the word order has been rearranged).

Long digital designations began to appear in matrix numbers, for example, YEX 973 - 4-1-1-7.

After 1988, the cover changed significantly - it already had a barcode, and on new copies, an apple logo was placed in the lower right corner of the back side (although there are copies without it).

The design of the labels has also changed completely. Along with new labels, you can often find labels from previous designs on records.
